#DofE With A Difference at Pen y dre School

Pen y Dre High School, Merthyr Tydfil, is a great example of how our support of the DofE Awards helped the school to launch its first whole Year 9 DofE Bronze enrolment. From the 109 pupils who started their DofE last year, 103 have now completed their volunteering, physical & skills sections with just the expedition left to complete once it's safe to do so.

The positive impact of the pupils taking part in volunteering activities in their communities has been fantastic and equates to over 1,300 hours of combined volunteering worth approximately £10,000 to the local area. Just some of the brilliant activities young people have done are- running a charity basketball tournament to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy, selling daffodils for Marie Curie and staging a Pen y Dre Charity Talent Show.

Deputy Head, Vikki Prosse, said : “DofE funding has been fundamental to us running the DofE programme within our school. With this fantastic support we have been able to provide a pathway for Bronze, Silver and Gold groups and been able to create a nucleus of trained staff to proactively run this excellent activity in school.  It is a really good extra-curricular activity and strikes a chord perfectly with the key tenets of the new school curriculum".

The school has also embraced “DofE with a Difference” an initiative the DofE charity has been encouraging and supporting to enable young people to continue their DofE programme at home in lockdown.

Couch to 5k was started by Deputy Head, Vikki Prosse, as an after school club to help young people with their DofE physical section and to encourage  pupils who were disengaged from the usual PE lessons. The club has continued to run on line during  lockdown as an option to keep Year 9 pupils physically  active and has enabled the completion of the physical section of the DofE programme.

Keith Maher, Headteacher, Pen y Dre High School, said:  “It's wonderful that our Business Class partner, Legal & General, are supporting the  Dof E Awards in Wales. We have a long standing partnership with Legal & General who have supported both teachers and pupils in so many beneficial and inspiring ways over the years it's great they also recognise the value of the Awards to young people. The DofE's aims and values are closely aligned to our own, so it has been a natural fit to work with the organisation in developing our pupils into kind, inquisitive and aspirational young men and women. The DofE has boosted our pupils’ resilience, opened up the world that little bit more and given them a sense of achievement in areas of experience that are new and challenging. We consider the DofE integral to our school’s ambition for itself and the community we serve.”
