United against scams - We’ve partnered with ‘Friends Against Scams’ to raise awareness of the rising number of scams

Local councils across the UK have recorded a 40% increase in reported scams since the start of lockdown in March 2020, while Citizens Advice believes one in three people have been targeted by a Covid-specific scam

Friends Against Scams (FAS), an initiative created by the National Trading Standards, aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of this type of fraud by empowering them to take a stand against scams. Since 2016 the National Trading Standards Scams Team, with the help of 738,431 Friends Against Scams, has prevented over 10 million pieces of fraudulent mail from reaching consumers. We’ve joined forces with FAS because we want to help raise awareness of these scams to protect our customers and our people from falling victim to them.

How can you get involved?

You can become a friend against scams by learning what a scam is, the different types currently in operation, how to look out for them, and what else you can do to protect those around you. If you want to learn more, become a SCAMchampion. Anybody can become a friend against scams and make a difference in their own way, so if you watched the video and feel as though you’ve benefitted from it, do recommend it to friends and family.

"The pandemic has caused an increase in scams not only because criminals have used it as an opportunity to create different ways of defrauding people but because we are all more susceptible to falling victim due to the increased anxiety and social isolation that COVID-19 has caused. A result of this stress means that our decision making becomes impaired and we are less likely to be able to identify whether the opportunity is a scam or legitimate.
