Bernie Hickman

Bernie has undertaken a broad range of roles at Legal & General before becoming CEO of the newly-formed Legal & General Retail division at the start of 2022.

Legal & General Retail covers the savings, protection, mortgage and retirement needs of our 12 million retail policyholders and workplace members. As well as harnessing the benefits of technology and data for our established businesses, the division has made strategic investments in a portfolio of fast-growing fintech businesses operating in adjacent markets.

Bernie joined Legal & General in 1998 from Commercial Union (now Aviva). Between 2005 and 2010 he was the Managing Director of Retail Protection, during which time he launched the UK Protection digital platform, OLP Connect. It provides market leading self-service functionality and high levels of straight-through processing. 

Bernie became MD of Retail Retirement in 2014 and the CEO co-founder of Legal & General Home Finance in 2015, when he led the Group’s entry into the lifetime mortgage market. Between 2017 and 2021 Bernie was CEO of Legal & General Insurance, responsible for our insurance and fintech businesses in the UK and USA. He’s also held the positions of Group Financial Controller, Investor Relations Director and Solvency II Managing Director.

Bernie is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries, is married and has four daughters.
