L&G has been an accredited member of the Good Business Charter since 2022, signing up to the charter in recognition of the integral role we believe business can play in delivering positive social and environmental outcomes.
We were proud to have been selected as a champion of Environmental Responsibility Monday, one of the fortnight’s 10 daily themes, to make the case for business placing environmental considerations at the heart of how they operate.
Putting sustainable, impactful business into action
As a business, we invest billions of pounds of capital in projects that aim to improve society, while making sustainability central to how we run our business. This activity includes investment in low-carbon technology, infrastructure, housing, and innovative venture stage businesses tackling some the world’s greatest challenges.
Our Affordable Homes business is one of the UK’s leading institutional developers and owners of affordable housing. In 2024, we launched a fund crowding in institutional investment to help tackle the UK's affordable housing crisis head on, with £510m raised to date. The fund’s pipeline consists of new-build, energy efficient affordable housing stock, over 95% of which has an EPC rating B or higher.
Since launching our affordable housing business in 2018 we have invested over £1bn and have over 8,000 homes in operation or development. We place customer service and sustainability at the heart of how we operate through communal energy schemes, an active management approach and regular tenant surveys, recognising that ensuring positive end-user experiences is not only ethical, but a value driver and an important part of protecting our reputation in the market.
We have also invested in companies that are developing and delivering innovative technologies that will shape the energy transition. Our portfolio of partner companies includes Kensa – a ground source heat pump business that offers a highly energy-efficient alternative to polluting gas boilers, and Sero – an energy services company that offers tools and expertise in retrofitting to create large-scale, cost-effective retrofit programmes to help landlords reach net zero and reduce energy bills for their residents.
“L&G became an accredited member of the Good Business Charter in 2022, and has renewed it ever since, because we strongly believe that business can be a powerful force for good. Our business has invested billions in sustainable affordable housing, infrastructure, clean energy (including retrofitting homes), and urban regeneration that creates green, vibrant places where people can thrive.”
